How to choose trekking poles

Trekking poles are an essential accessory for anyone who loves outdoor activities, hiking, or long walks on challenging terrain. They not only help maintain balance, but also reduce stress on joints and improve stability on demanding trail sections. Well-chosen poles can make your journey more comfortable, safer, and help boost endurance.

Why Use Trekking Poles

– Improved balance and stability – help maintain balance while walking on rocky, slippery, or steep terrain.
– Reduced joint strain – especially important during descents and long hikes with a heavy backpack.
– Support during ascents – relieve your legs by shifting some of the weight to the arms, making climbs easier.
– Additional functions – can be used to check snow or water depth, or even to help pitch a tent or tarp.

Types of Trekking Poles

By construction:
– Monolithic poles (fixed) – no length adjustment; often chosen by athletes for specific activities (e.g., mountain running).
– Telescopic poles – foldable, with adjustable length. Versatile and easy to transport.
– Segmented poles (folding) – consist of multiple sections that fold into each other. Very compact, but not always adjustable.

By material:
– Aluminum – durable, damage-resistant, optimal weight-to-price ratio. A good choice for most hikers.
– Carbon fiber – lightweight and stiff, good shock absorption, but more expensive and more prone to mechanical damage.

What to look for when choosing?

Pole Length:
– The correct length is key. Stand upright, hold the pole, and bend your arm at a 90° angle. The tip of the pole should touch the ground.
– On flat terrain, your forearm should be parallel to the ground.
– For descents, lengthen the poles by 5–10 cm; for ascents, shorten them to reduce strain on the arms.

Length Locking System:
– Twist lock – screw mechanism to secure segments. Durable, but may jam when dirty.
– External lever lock – quick and convenient, even with gloves on. More intuitive to use.

Pole Material:
– Affects weight, durability, and price. Aluminum is durable and universal; carbon is lighter, but more fragile.

Grip (Handle):
– Should fit well in the hand and not cause chafing.
– Cork – elastic, absorbs sweat, non-slip. Ideal for long hikes.
– EVA foam – light, soft, dries quickly.
– Plastic – cheapest, but can be slippery, especially in wet conditions.

Wrist Straps and Loops:
– Help with holding the poles and distributing weight. Choose soft, adjustable straps that don’t chafe.

Tip:
– Standard tip is made of hard alloy (tungsten/steel), good for rocky trails.
– For snow or loose terrain, consider extra tips or baskets.

Weight and Packability:
– For long hikes and mountains, lighter models are best. Telescopic and folding poles are easier to pack.

Choosing Trekking Poles by Type of Hike

– Moderately difficult trails – universal telescopic poles made of aluminum with a cork or foam handle.
– Mountain expeditions – carbon fiber poles with a solid locking system and durable tip.
– Winter hikes – wide baskets are essential to prevent poles from sinking into snow.
– Nordic walking – usually fixed-length (monolithic) poles, tailored to the user's height.

User Tips

– Regularly check locks and mechanisms to avoid the pole collapsing during a hike.
– Use wrist straps correctly: insert your hand from underneath so the weight rests on the wrist, not the fingers.
– Clean the poles after hikes, especially after rain or snow.
– Store poles folded to extend the lifespan of the mechanisms.

Popular Trekking Pole Brands

The most popular and trusted brands include:
- MEDICINES

Each brand offers a wide range of models in different price and technical categories.

The choice of trekking poles depends on your goals, trail type, and personal preferences. Pay attention to construction, material, length, locking system, grip type, and tip. Well-chosen poles will become your reliable adventure companion, providing comfort, safety, and allowing you to enjoy the beauty of nature without unnecessary strain on your body.
